MIB to expand news coverage in more countries, recruit journalists

Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is considering to expand India’s news broadcast further in other countries to bring forward India’s viewpoint in countries that matter and reach out to the Indian diasporas. Countries like USA, UAE, UK, Saudi Arabia, Malasyia, Mauritius, Nepal, Oman, Kuwait and Russia are likely to be included in the final list. The final list may go upto 20-25 countries.

“Journalists will be appointed as foreign correspondents, however, the exact figure of countries to be covered and journalists to be recruited has not yet been decided,” a source in the ministry closely associated with the matter told exchange4media.

However, at present, the ministry has decided to shortlist the countries based on several criteria including number of visits by PM Modi, absolute population of Indian Diaspora and percentage population of Indian Diaspora.

Other factors taken into consideration while shortlisting the countries are number of tourist arrivals to India, cumulative FDI, bilateral trade upto 2016-17, remittances to India, strategic partnership and proximity to multi lateral organisation.

“The ministry is trying to move on the same track as China,” the source told us.

China’s Xinhua News Agency is the country’s official press agency and arguably it is also the largest news agency in the world in terms of correspondent worldwide. Xinhua operates in over 150 foreign bureaus around the world.

“The ministry is also considering to have a separate agency like Xinhua but is yet to make a final call over it,” the source revealed.
